Families of about 14,000 New Mexico students will receive retroactive benefits starting next week to cover the cost of free and reduced-price school meals their children missed in August and September due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Benefits for missed school meals in October and November will be distributed in April. It is important that families understand that these Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfers (P-EBT) will cover only meals an eligible student missed under these conditions:
- The student missed at least five straight days of school;
- The absences were due to COVID-19 -- either the student tested positive or the student was a close contact to a student who tested positive.
- The absences were due to the student’s district/school being shut down due to positive COVID cases.
